Dr. Messinger specializes in evaluating patients that have been suffering with complex, chronic health issues. Many patients that he sees have experienced health challenges for years and have never had the underlying cause of their issues properly identified. Unfortunately, when the underlying cause is still a mystery, a person will often experience a progressive deterioration of their health. Through a very thorough evaluation, Dr. Messinger aims at discovering the root cause(s) of the patient’s symptoms. He then aims carefully selected treatments to address the root cause(s).

Home: About

Lyme disease is an infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme is known as the great imitator since it can cause many symptoms in every body system, including neurological, musculoskeletal, hormonal, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, urinary, and more. The vast array of symptoms that it can cause can be overwhelming and confusing to many physicians. This will often lead to patients being seen by a number of specialists to address the symptoms in these various body systems. However, there are usually some underlying root causes, a common thread, if you will, that is at the core and causing all of the dysfunction. Lyme disease and/or co-infections are usually at the core causing this dysfunction,

These organisms are carried in ticks, but there is strong evidence that there are other vectors of transmitting these diseases. In addition, data shows that more than 50% of the patients who have documented cases of Lyme disease, have no recollection of a tick bite. Less than 50% of those with known tick bites, have the classic Erythema Migrans (bullseye) rash. Standard of care testing for these infections is woefully inadequate (insensitive). Many of my patients who had seen other providers and requested a Lyme disease test had it come back negative due to the poor standard of care test. When I do more accurate testing with my patients, we often find the presence of these hidden infections.

Dr. Messinger is a member of the International Lyme Associated Disease Society (ILADS) and has done extensive research and training into the treatment of these diseases.

Mold illness is a newly recognized phenomena in medicine. It has been found to be a common underlying cause of chronic, unresolved health issues. It is a condition that results from an accumulation of mycotoxins in the body. It is different than a mold allergy.
A person could have elevated mycotoxins in their body either due to a current mold exposure from a water damaged building or due to an exposure(s) from the past. Some people who have had a prior mold exposure, due to several factors will not clear the mold from their body. Mold can colonize in the body and if not eliminated, can cause symptoms in any body system.
Like Lyme disease, accumulation of mold and mycotoxins can result in a wide range of chronic symptoms. The most common symptoms include chronic fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and chronic sinus issues. Other symptoms that can occur include gastro-intestinal symptoms such as bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea, joint pain, dizziness, unusual patterns of numbness, unexplained weight gain, depression. anxiety, and sharp or shooting pains. Children often present with ADHD/ADD in addition to some of the above symptoms. In 2013, a study published by Dr. Joseph Brewer demonstrated that 93% of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome had elevated mycotoxins in their urine. Dr. Messinger has found that elevated mycotoxin levels and mold colonization are common contributors to patient’s health issues in his patient population. Treatment results in significant improvement in people’s health.

From Above

In addition to treating Tick-borne infections and Mold Illness, Dr. Messinger has experience in treating patients with numerous conditions. He could give you a long laundry list of conditions that he treats such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, IBS, auto-immunity, etc, etc.  But what is important in treating “any condition” is that the patient with the condition, not just the condition, is treated. This approach lends itself to the individualization of treatment tailored to the person.

It is also important to note, that most of the time the name of a condition, or even a diagnosis that is given to a person, is just a “label” that matches the symptoms and/or findings. It does not necessarily explain why a person has those symptoms (or that label). Equally important, the “label” does nothing to help the person resolve their symptoms and heal.

Good examples of this are Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ ME and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. A person may be given this diagnosis, but  the diagnosis does nothing to shed light as to why it is happening and what needs to be done to reverse the condition.

Thus the bottom line is that if one is still having health issues, regardless of what diagnoses have been given to them, Dr. Messinger’s goal is to find the underlying cause

It is very common when a person has chronic health issues, that the body’s energy systems are being affected. Most importantly, the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system regulates most functions automatically in our body without us having to think about it, for example digestion, blood pressure and heart rate, detoxification pathways, our balance between the “rest and relax state” and the “fight or flight state”. While it is necessary to address the physical imbalances created by various infections and toxins, in many cases it is important to address and repair the body’s energy systems that are affected.

Dr. Messinger incorporates various treatments to work with the patient’s nervous system. These include Neural Therapy, Autonomic Response Testing, Breathwork techniques, and Shiatsu.
